Abstract: | Haloes in relief formed from concentric rings of various diameter are a common occurrence in painting from Cologne during the middle ages. They are directly applied to the canvas or wooden panel by scribing an arc of soft malleable material with the purpose made template. The study and cataloguing of existing paintings with relief Haloes in the collection of the WRM in Cologne and the investigation into their application and use, is the focus of this work. Furthermore, attempts have been made to recreate a suitable malleable material and working templates. The marks left by the templates used to reconstruct the Haloes were examined whilst lit from above and from the side and also under x-rays in order to compare them with the originals. In addition the typical characteristics of drawn, carved and moulded Haloes are described. |
