| Zusammenfassung: | The protection of cultural heritage lies in the responsibility of the state. However, private sponsors are needed in order to assure that all objects under preservation orders receive equal consideration. Thus, it is the goal of the present thesis to investigate the process of acquiring private sponsors. To this end, the thesis focuses on the example of the Steinmeister funeral monument in Bünde, Northrhine-Westfalia, which is in need of resto-ration. With regard to the task at hand, the legal provisions and the organization of monument conversation in Northrhine-Westfalia are discussed. Also, the measures taken by three cemeteraries to engage private sponsors are investigated by means of a questionnaire-based survey. In addition, the Steinmeister funerary monument is described and ana-lyzed. On that basis, the thesis develops a funding and civic engagement concept for this monument. The convervatory and restoratory analysis of the Steinmeister monument has shown that the object is in a generally intact state. However, a number of immediate measure need to be taken to assure the conversation of the object in the future. In particular, the prob-lem of the warped copper plating that forms the monument’s roof covering needs to be addressed. The thesis narrows down the group of possible sponsors, using insights gained in private sponsoring and engagement, results from the analysis of the Steinmeister monument and from investigating thee role of the person buried there in the local economy. The best prospects for a sponsorship are likely offered by companies of the cigar industry because the buried person has significantly shaped that industry. The case of the Steinmeister monument can serve as an example of abandoned funer-ary monuments that are under protection orders and for which there is no beneficial owner. The process of sponsor acquisition modelled in this thesis may be adapted in a regional or national context |
