Abstract: | The object of the diploma is the practical conservation and partial restoration of the canvas painting "Blick auf Dresden". Included is written and pictorial documentation of the concept and a description of the executed steps. The painting is undated (probably from the middle of the 18th Century) and unsigned. Its general condition is marked by serious damage, such as tears and holes, as well as previous attempts at conservation and restoration, including for example an impregnation of the canvas with shellac, multiple applications of patches or the great number of old fillings in the damaged paint layer. In the process of conservation of the resined and hardened support, problems arised for the integration of old canvas inserts, the closure of gapping tears as well as for the handling of old glued areas and fillings. As a result of the large number of defects the question of the necessity of lining the complete support repeatedly posed itself. In addition, the removal of varnish and overpaint on the badly damaged paint layers present themselves as further problems in this project. In this diploma a special role is taken by the treatment of areas with large canvas losses in connection with a waxy filler, both of which were revealed by removing the patches from the reverse of the painting. The old filled areas were preserved by a method that is especially developed and discussed as a theoretical theme of this diploma. |
