On November 1st in 1895 the Skladanowsky Brothers successfully performed the first public film projection in Germany. The camera they used to shoot the pictures, the socalled „Kurbelkasten I“, is part of a number of technical gadgets constructed by Max Skladanowsky. The present paper deals with their preservation. This camera stands out for its chronological position in german film history. However it does not represent a breakthrough in cinematographic technology. The historical development including the „dispute about the invention“ is being elucidated. A goal of conservation is established in order to elaborate the concrete plan of action. Every move in the conservation process of the apparatus is being discussed to put the actual intervetion into concrete terms.
