Language: Original   -   Translation
Abstract: Backing protection is a frequently used method in preventive conservation of canvas paintings. This thesis gives a general idea of the historically and the currently used methods and materials. The way climatic changes influence canvas paintings is described and the effects of backing boards are illustrated. Moreover several functions of backing protection are considered and tested in a number of practical experiments. The results show that further demands on backing boards are necessary. A decision making model was developed to simplify the selection a suitable protection.
