Barbara Mutter Supitar: Investigation and documentation of canvass from easel paintings in Switzerland Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Abstract: Nearly two hundred canvases from easel paintings painted in Switzerland during the period of 1600 and 1950 were analysed with regard to fibre types and fabric structures. Visual analysis of textile structure and light microscopy were used as the main tools.

This research was inspired by a similar study done on French paintings. The results show that until the end of the 18th century, canvases in Switzerland as well as in France were mainly maid out of hemp fibres. Linen canvases were commonly used during the 19th century. Cotton fabrics appeared already in the beginning of the 19th century - almost hundred years earlier compared to France. A larger variety of fibre mixtures could be found in the first half of the 20th century.
