Abstract: | The Supermarine S6B Seaplane S1595 exhibited at the Science Museum London was constructed in 1931 for the Schneider Trophy Contest. The paint on the light alloy construction is cellulosenitrate based, it is fragile and flaking. The textile cover of the rudder is impregnated with cellulosenitrate dope and has several tears on both sides. Within this thesis the aims and directions of a future conservation and preservation in respect of the historical significance and current context of the aeroplane is elaborated. The environment of the aeroplane is examined and preventive conservation methods are suggested. The conservation is carried out on the textile rudder and partially on the painted surface, including closing the tears in the torn canvas and consolidation of the flaking paint.
