Abstract: | The paper describes the conservation of a large Thai Nang Yai shadow-puppet made of rawhide. The puppet has been damaged by vertical storage and is severely distorted. The conservation treatment developed for the shadow-puppet can be used for all of the 160 Nang Yai puppets of the Ethnologisches Museum SMB-SPK. The treatment contains dry cleaning, flattening by humidification with a GORE-TEX sandwich, securing the breakages with Japanese tissue bridges and the development of a preventive conservation treatment for the whole collection. Emphasis is also put on the verification of ethnographic identification by scientific analysis regarding the making of the puppets. |
