Abstract: The subject of the thesis is the conservation of caned chairs. The plant material ‘rattan’ and its use are described thoroughly. Different kinds of damage including deterioration are collected and their causes are discussed. The requirements of the different methods and techniques of conservation are described and subsequent experiments are carried out. The latter includes cleaning, plasticization and reshaping, filling, reinforcing with backings and retouching. Among other things eight different adhesive – backing material combinations are selected which are suitable for the replacement of losses and the reinforcement of breaks. Finally the results of the research are converted into the conservation of two caned seats with characteristic kinds of damage.
