Karin-Juliane Meierhofer: ‘Florentine Cradle’ – Removement from the back of a double sided painting Tempera-Mixture on wood back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The partial cradle on this late gothic altar panel depicting St. Barbara showed new cracks as a result of this cradle. Therefore it had to be removed. Preliminary scientific examinations gave informations about the damages and the condition of the paint remnants below the cradle. The practical work focussed on the detachment of this construction and the difficult removing of remaining glue residues from the original tempera paint film. Further treatment included the consolidation of the paint layers. Surface cleaning and varnish removal helped to improve the quality of the whole picture.
