Abstract: | Within the Diploma thesis conservation methods for a scraper dating from the 11th century found at a smelting place in the western Harz region in Germany are elaborated and carried out. The archaeological importance of this object is derived from its preserved wooden handle. Special focus therefore is given to the consolidation and conservation of the wooden handle in combination with the parts of the object made from iron. The consolidatant Lactitol, applied in aquaeous solution, was only very recently introduced in the conservation of waterlogged wooden objects. Within this diploma thesis the application of Lactitol is examined in several testseries on its possible corrosive effect on iron, by means of measuring the corrosion potential. The consolidant Lactitol was finally applied successfully and the iron parts of the scraper are treated and conserved. |
