The dissertation about the conservation of a marble statue of Alexander the Great from the antiquescollection of the National Museums of Berlin (Antikensammlung der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin) illustrates the provenance (collection of Polignac), the archaeological context (portraits of Alexander, mailed statues) and new perceptions about the completion of the statue. Extensive methods of completion during the baroque age, procured a baroque conception of the antique fragments. Beside methods of conservation and natural scientifically investigation methods to analyse the historical conservationsmaterials, it is important to find out any arrangement with the baroque conception, which gives a new frame for the antiques.The conservation leads to more informations about the style of the completion, so that the baroque solution becomes more understandable and acceptable. The find of some fragments, which had been missing at the beginning of the conservation, gives the possibility to reconstruct the whole baroque character of the statue.
