Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis focuses in the investigation, conservation and restauration of a panel painting from 1482,
currently displayed on the south wall of the choir in the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Görlitz. The painting is an
epitaph of Melchior von Rechenberg, depicting the Last Judgement along with him as the donor in its
iconography. The epitaph has been structurally and aesthetically damaged by various factors and was
significantly altered by previous restoration efforts. As part of the diploma thesis, the painting technique, its
current condition and the complex restoration history of the epitaph were thoroughly examined. Based on
these findings, a comprehensive restoration concept was developed and partially carried out. The concept
includes both conservation measures aimed at preserving the original substance, as well as restoration
treatments, such as a retouching strategy to aesthetically improve the paint layer and restore the visual unity
of the painting.
