Pandora Köhler: Historical restorations tell stories. 160 years of methods and actors in the Maiolica Collection of the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Museum of Applied Arts Vienna possesses a unique collection of Maiolicas from the 15th
to the 21st century with great art-historical value. Some Maiolicas originate in renowned Italian
and Spanish manufactories. Historical restorations were found on 164 Maiolicas, which can
reveal surprising stories and events. Through the evaluation of the measures and interventions
executed between 1864 and 2024, an inventory and condition assessment of the collection
(2023-2024), as well as the scientific investigation of restoration materials, new insights into
the restoration history of the maiolica collection are to be gained. On this basis a practical
guide has been created as a decision-making aid for dealing with historical restorations at the
MAK in the future. The practical part of the thesis consists of exemplary sample restorations
of two Maiolicas, where the conservation of historical restorations is the focus.
