Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the Installation Bergheidengasse by Josef Trattner from 1989,
which is located in the courtyard of a school in Vienna and was created for activities of school
children. The five sculptures, made from glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) and expanded
polystyrene (EPS), underwent a thorough inventory and condition assessment. In view of the
numerous reworkings in the past, a comprehensive conservation is necessary in order to keep
the sculptures permanently stable and aesthetically pleasing. The primary focus is on the
reinforcement and recoating of the GRP, supported by the finite element method (FEM) to
simulate mechanical stresses. The concept developed, which emphasizes the importance of
transdisciplinary exchange and the challenges of conserving modern materials, serves as a
guide for the upcoming conservation and includes a maintenance plan.
