Abstract: | The technical installations in three listed granaries of a former “Heeresverpflegungsamt” (army food storage) of the Second World War in Berlin-Spandau had been preserved through their subsequent use for the emergency food supply of the West Berlin population during the Cold War. The importance of the machinery as tangible evidence of the National Socialist efforts to achieve self-sufficiency but also of the plight of West Berlin after the division of Germany is elaborated in this thesis. Since all technical installations of the granaries were disposed of in the course of renovation work in 2019, the focus of the thesis is, in addition to a historical contextualization of the grain storage machines, on their systematic recording in terms of function, classification and material composition. Forms specially developed for the material examinations can serve as a template for future documentations of large technical systems. |
