Abstract: This research deals with historic and historicising roof tiles named Kanalica of Dubrovnik (UNESCO World Heritage protection since 1979). A comparison of the historic tiles with recent tiles used after the war of the 90ies is presented through scientific analyses. All examinations focus on the material composition and the surface properties.The aim of the research is to improve awareness and sensitise the public and conservation institutions for differences between the historic and recent tiles in Dubrovnik. Research results might also encourage communities to develop further strategies for the protection of historic roof tiles as an important part of cultural heritage, as well as contribute the regulation of tile substitution in historical ensembles. Based on the results of this research, the production of the roof tile, which are more accurate in detail is aimed for. In order to make a complete comparison, analysis on the used clay temper, the organic compounds, the firing temperature, the degree of sintering, the porosity, as well as the overall identification of the elements was provided.
