Abstract: | In this study the mechanisms and use of the the complexing agents Ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) and Diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA) and reducing agent Sodium dithionite (SDT) to reduce the iron content in paper was investigated. Systematic investigations were carried out in the course of this thesis. Following up case studies from the 1980s several test series were carried out to determine the optimal conditions for the application of SDT, EDTA und DTPA. Parameters such as exposure time, pH and concentration were varied and combined in different ways. The iron content of the paper before and after treatment was determined with XRF. Additionally, samples were light aged and temperature aged after application of EDTA, DTPA and SDT to assess the long-term effect of these materials if they had not been removed properly. Colour measurements were carried out to identify ageing effects of the agents. |
