Abstract: | The subject of the following diploma thesis is the conservation of two modern sculptures by the Austrian post-war artist Helmut Leherb. The material installations, which date back to the second half of the 20th century, are owned by the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. One object is an historic cast iron hat stand with several dry wooden branches and taxidermy bird specimens. The main source of concern is the contamination caused by bird droppings on different materials. The other object is a painted papier-mâché mannequin with various adornments. Its state is threatened by severe ruptures and deformations relating to the papier-mâché construction. Based on the results of numerous scientific investigations, a conservational concept is developed. Necessary conservatory measures entailed cleaning the different surfaces and gently reforming the papier-mâché body. |
