| Abstract: | This Bachelor‐Thesis is concerned with the study of a pencil drawing on tracing paper mounted on cardboard, from the collection of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. The illustration shows a scene from the Nibelungenlied and was drawn by Hermann Fötsch, painter and photographer from Altenburg, during his studies in 1846 in Munich. The peculiarity of this object is the aging of the image which is unusual for tracing paper. Massive yellowing and browning, through years of exhibition in a pub in Erfurt, loss of material as well as many wrinkles and tears characterise the condition. Normally the appearance of tracing paper characterises itself by extreme sensitivity to water and a concomitant ripple. The tracing paper of this object, however, has an unusual smoothness and flatness. To clarify this unusual appearance, the drawing has been studied art historically, scientifically and technologically. To create a suitable maintenance system, the thesis includes research on the various methods of preparation of tracing paper, and the identification of the material of the object with the help of this and further investigations. The difficulty in creating a viable concept in this case is the material combination of tracing paper and cardboard. |
