Abstract: | This diploma‐thesis deals with the mural paintings on the walls and the ceiling in the chapel of the Renaissance‐Manor house in Oberzetzscha, Altenburg (Thuringia). The paintings presumably have been made in 1567, the time of the construction of the building, displaying Christian subjects in combination with floral ornaments. In preparation of the renovation of the interior of the building during the summer of 2010, the paintings have been rediscovered in the small room with the groined vault. A major part of this thesis was the assessment of the inventory and its conditions and in this context the determination of the causes that have led to the present damage. Another aspect was the analysis of the composition of the used materials and the paint‐layers. Based on this analysis, a concept of measures was developed and an exemplary conservation and restoration was carried out on a sample area. In addition, an iconographical and art historical examination of the picture contents took place, to facilitate their interpretation. |
