Abstract: | Within the scope of the present master thesis, a conception for a conservation and restoration Treatment on the so called "Mässlin-Altar" in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe was established. Prior to this, the history, the techniques and the preservation Status was investigated. The concept aims to Transfer the heterogeneous appearence of the altar Piece into a balanced and aesthetic look. The main challenge in finding the concept was to find a way to remove the browned, insoluble egg white varnish from the painting. Another focus was on uncovering the well-preserved, original gilding which is covered by several new, oil bound gilding layers. The removal of varnishes and overpaintings as well as the exposing of the original gilding was carried out in sample areas. |
