Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis concerns the collection of paintings in the Zwettl monastery and the development of the first inventory for 263 paintings. Each object is given an accession number and is then technically assessed and its condition rated. The information is recorded in a database, the analysis and interpretation of which is presented in the collection analysis. This focuses particularly on the condition of the collection and possible reasons for the damages. The results of the collection analysis highlight the need for preventive conservation and care of the collection. Therefore a detailed catalogue of measures is developed and materials are suggested with particular emphasis on the improvement of the paintings’ framing and their hanging system. As an example the concept is carried out on a wall with 18 paintings.
