Abstract: | This Master`s Thesis compiles exterior characteristics of production technique of paper produced with papermaking machines. The description of attributes of identification and differentiation compared to handmade papers was carried together on the basis of literary sources. This should enable an assignment of early machine papers in the space of time from 1810 to 1853, checked against handmade papers and its features, which are also reviewed within the thesis. A discussion of literature takes place in the textual beginning. The main part contains definitions, production techniques, raw materials and characteristics caused of production process. The latter focuses prioritize outer marks of converting, induced during manufacturing: Texture of felt and sieve, deckle edge and water mark, if available, coloring, distribution of fibers and thickness of single sheet. It`s a question of optical research by different papers, examined using incident light, sided light and transmitted light, besides metrological techniques: Digital microscopy and laser scanning microscopy. The thesis is aimed to furnish a first, systematic analysis and description of exterior characteristics of machine papers, to offer a classification. |
