Abstract: | In the course of the research project on the medieval Winged Retable “Goldene Tafel aus Lüneburg” at the State Museum of Lower Saxony Hanover which was initiated in 2012, the discolored retouches and overpaintings are examined before it is being restored. Presumably these can be assigned to a restoration phase in the early 1920s. In archive documents references were found that especially “Zet-Colors” were used for the restoration of paintings at the former Provincial Museum in Hanover at that time. This is a series of artist resin oil colors which was brought to market by “Günther Wagner Hannover & Wien” in 1921. In the first instance the background of the restoration measure is to be revealed in the present paper and in this context the history of development and use of Zet-Colors is investigated. In the scientific focus the potential of the UV/VIS reflectance spectroscopy as a surface analysis with regard to the identification of pigments and the classification of the retouching agents, assumedly Zet-colors, on the Golden Altar, is examined. The analysis of the measured UV/VIS-spectra is conducted on the basis of a self-compiled database with reference spectra of original shade cards of these artist colors as well as on a collection of colors available at the archaeometry laboratory Hildesheim. Additional pigment analyzing and pigment characterizing examinations are carried out primarily on selective samples, which are taken from the hand applied layers of the shade cards. These include the polarization microscopy, transverse microsections, REM-EDX measurements as well as the Raman spectroscopy. Through a low number of assays of the object the results of the applied methods can be compared and verified. The results show that an identification of Zet-colors as retouching material on the Golden Altar could in all probability, be analytically adduced. |
