Abstract: | This thesis deals with the investigation and conservation treatment of a canvas painting by Hubert Sattler (1817-1904), son of Johann Michael Sattler, creator of the famous Salzburg-Panorama. The painting ˮForum in Pompeji“ is part of the Salzburg Museum`s collection which contains a series of 128 views, mainly of popular travel destinations. Sattler exhibited his so called ˮCosmoramas“ in darkened rooms using lenses set into walls through which the visitor could see magnified, brightly lit paintings. Using x-ray, evidence of a second depiction was discovered. Deformations and wrinkles in the upper part of the painting are closely linked to the reuse of the canvas. Due to the previous application of two oil-resin coatings on the back of the canvas the painting is stiff and as brittle as a biscuit. Severe distortions were observed in both the canvas and the painted layers. The support had several tears, one of them crossing the painting in the center area from the top down to the bottom. The challenge of the treatment was to find an appropriate method to minimize the deformations which was realized by a reduction of the coating on the back of the fabric. Subsequently all tears could be repaired with inlays, followed by fillings and retouching. The aim was to re-establish the visual integrity of the canvas. Key-words: Cosmorama, oil-resin coating on the reverse, reuse of the canvas, bees wax varnish, tear mending, inlays, distortions, backing. |
