Abstract: | This bachelor thesis describes and discusses the restoration of a cardboard-mounted commemorative photograph from 1910, portraying a group of reservists. The disruption of an image’s aesthetic and historical unity, in favour of ideal restoration, is always a crucial aspect of the restoration process, and is discussed here in detail. The aesthetic content, features and preservation state of the photograph was documented, after which a detailed material analysis for was conducted to guide subsequent restoration. To allow unhindered perception of the image, the restoration implemented focussed on the treatment of material losses and on restoring durability to the photograph. Treatment techniques and practices from the fields of photographic restoration and paper restoration were applied. |
