Abstract: | It is currently unfeasible to present the Biophon sound films produced by German film pioneer Oskar Messter between 1903 and 1913 in their original format. Because of their delicate nature, historical significance and for reasons of preservation, it is not possible to use authentic Biophon projection devices and the few extant Biophon film copies and shellacs for projection purposes. Historic Biophon sound films were recorded on two separate carriers. The aim of this paper is to develop a concept that combines both image and sound on one single carrier in order to allow the presentation of the original content using modern screening systems. On the basis of an exemplary reconstruction, a workflow is created that can be used for future reconstructions. |
