Overview:
Abstract: In this Master Thesis various scientific techniques for the investigation of paintings were discussed und applied on a painting of Georg Philipp Rugendas d.Ä. from the RPM in Hildesheim. Initially, a detailed radiation-diagnostic examination (light, ranking light, UV photography, IR photography and reflectography, X-ray, tomography) was carried out beside microscope observations of paint cross-sections in order to analyze the technical structure and the state of preservation of this painting and the painting technique of Rugendas. Subsequently, followed the identification of the inorganic pigments by the means of the SEM/EDX- analysis and the micro-chemistry as well as by the commonly implemented non-destructive ED-XRF. The penetration depth and the limitations of XRF were additionally tested with measurements on manufactured test panels. In order to achieve accurate and meaningful results during a painting analysis, it is recommended to combine different scientific examination methods.
