Abstract: In this thesis a method for systematically gaining imformation about damages of
archive holdings, produced between 1821 and 1938 and stored at ’Hessisches Staatsarchiv’
in Darmstadt is developed. The definition of several classes corresponding to
different types of damages is a main part as it makes it possible to gain major advantages
for planning preservation measures. Initially the objectives of preservation
will be discussed. The development of a model of types of damages is done by referring
to published works and surveys of institutions. The established methods will be
checked for their potential for generalisation and the findings used for the compilation
of the needed criteria. The development also includes the creation of a spreadsheet
(using Microsoft Excel) which is described step by step. In order to rate the current
conditions, common types of damage typical for files produced in the time period
mentiond above are explained using photographs. Tools for damage rating are introduced
including, among other things, the near-infrared spectroscopy which is used
for determination of the current state of decay of the paper. The recording of the data
is done by random picks. The number of picks needed for a representative result is
calculated using a statistical model. After the categorisation recommended further
procedures are discussed and the overall approach is critically analysed.
