Overview:

Abstract: Coptic codices of the 4th or 5th century AD often survive only fragmentarily. On the basis of the restauration of such a codex this master’s thesis presents a new method for the conservation of papyrus. A combination of palaeographical, codicological and technological analyses has made it possible to place a considerable number of loose fragments onto pages of Cologne Coptic Codex Inv. 3221. For this purpose an analysis was made of the fluid use for writing and through IR-reflectography the ink could be classified into ink types. To each of the four scribes of the codex could each be assigned an ink type. Furthermore various palaeographical and codicological features of the codex could be observed. These have been gathered and systematized in a database created specifically for this codex. The placement of the loose fragment made it possible to establish a new reconstruction of the codex pages. The codex was conserved and is now ready for a philological analysis.
