| Abstract: | The treated object is a painted and carved wood preserved in fragments, belonging to the ethnological collection of Kulturhistorisches Museum of Rostock. The artwork is probably the end part of a handle of a dance axe referred to Tolai people living on island of New Britain (Papua New Guinea). Traditional precolonial as well as modern materials and tools were used. After classifying the object in the context of art and cultural history there is an analysis of techniques being used and a description of its condition. Finally there is a concept for conservation treatment and suggestions for transport, storage and exhibition. |
