Abstract: Pastels painted on parchment form a complex group of objects due to their material composition. They engage by their undiminished, matte colour effect but present a challenge to conservators and curators because of their fragile piant layer. Furthermore, the contradictory quality of the picture carrier, which is characterized by durability and sensibility, has to be taken into consideration. Using the example of a central pastel portrait from the Georg August University Göttingen, this thesis will examine the area of conflict between the restricted susceptibility to treatment and the aesthetic demands. Methods for the conservation will be discussed. From the different alternatives for the handling of the microbiological infestation, one will be adapted to the object an executed.
