Abstract: | This bachelor thesis deals with an oak-chest dated 1688 and provided by the Country Museum Bad Münder. The main effort lies in the evaluation of the best preservation/ conservation methode and future presentation of this oak-chest. The chest carries a carved inscription, "m. Tonnies Schutze", and is highly decorated with punch marks. The maker of the chest is unknown but his tool marks and line marking are still present. The findings protection of this chest have proved that it was built with classical timber joints. The ferrous attachements are replacements with exeption of the key-label. The lock with responding hook is completely missing. The coating composition consists of mordant and wax. The cleaning and consolidation was carried out exactly as proposed in the concept. The cleaning results on tested areas are very satisfyingly. At this stage the coloration of the surface is clearly recognizeable and a low brillant degree helps to create an even appearance. The attachement of loose and removed parts protects against further losses and contributes to the stabiliy of the case. A functionality is given itselfs, but the big elbowroom of the band iron strap, a closed presentation is recommended. The replacement of the missing profile strips on the sides and the front is not necessary for stability reason but would add to its aesthetic appearance. However, a supplement of the missing profile strip in the base plate contributes to a better stability. The oak-chest ist a very good example for a safekeeping furniture of the 17th.cent. and alltogehter in a steady and well-preserved condition. |
