Christiane Varchmin: Opportunities for conservation of poly(methyl methacylate) with selected reactive adhesives back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Research for this master thesis has been undertaken in context of extensive studies to explore opportunities for bonding fractures and filling cracks of artworks made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Within the diploma thesis (2010) various synthetic low molecular weight resins and transparent double-faced adhesive tapes were tested for their applicability in conservation of PMMA. In a second step this thesis methodically investigates selected reactive adhesives such as epoxy resins, UV-curing adhesives and silane modified polymers as an opportunity to achieve higher bond strengths. In addition to the compatibility with the plastic, the examination on hand focuses on the strengths the selected adhesives reach in bonding PMMA and to which extent they fulfill the requirements concerning the conservation of PMMA.
