Abstract: The Grat Be´al Gebri represents an important archaeological discovery. The timber/stone construction of this monumental building consists of a loam plastering which partially transformed into burned clay after a fire.

During its excavation the plaster is stabilised with Ludox PX30. After tests on the ground, regional binders were excluded as consolidation materials. Aqueous silica sol products empirically proved to have good consolidation properties for loose substrate of the object.

This consolidation effect could not be verified unambiguously by laboratory tests with Ludox. However, ultrasonic measurements indicate a more compact texture after the treatment with Ludox and Levasil 500. Further studies were performed using clay samples which had been prepared based on the composition of the genuine plaster and the influence of three silica sol products was compared. Though, a verifiable consolidation was not observed.
