Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The gothic wall paintings of the Agnes Chapel at the Cologne cathedral St. Peter and Maria show a painting technology which is similar to paintings on panel. With regard to the asset of gothical painting and due to its extensive object and restoration history, the five wall paintings are strongly reduced in very different ways. The topics of this paper are therefore (apart from an overview of past examinations and measures) the implementation of additional examinations as well as the documentation of asset and condition. Special attention is paid to the conservation problem, which argues with the ethical and technical possibility for the reduction of a consolidation material applied into the 1950ies. Besides practical tests for a check of methods concerning the reduction of the aged consolidation material at the object, the consequences for different presentation possibilities of wall paintings in the chapel are pointed out.
