Abstract: In the last 20 years the ancient techinque of limewash as surface coating has found its way back to preservation. The “Wiener Spinnerin am Kreuz” is one of Austrias most eminent gothic monument and has a wide history of Restauration. During the last Restaurationmeasure 1988 a limewash has been applied as sacrifacial layer. If the limewash has served the purpose by survey and evaluation of this measure gets cleared. In series of tests samples of lime sandstone coated with relevant limewashcompositions are examined for their adequacy of exterior usage.
