Zusammenfassung: | This work deals with the examination, the documentation and the interventive conservation work of a cap from China dating from the time of the Liao-dynasty (907-1125). The cap consists of several layers of fabric, which are stitched together, and a fleece-wadding. All the textile components are made of silk fibres. Remains of a painted decoration can be recognized on the upper fabric of the cap, which is a gauze-weave. In the first part of this study the cap is put in its historical context. Its condition, the applied techniques and the different materials used for its construction are described. Some aspects of the ethical considerations concerning the conservation of archaeological textiles are also mentioned here. The second part deals with the practical proceedings of the conservation treatment. The conservation concept, including wet-cleaning and stitching-consolidation, is explained and its execution described. |
