Zusammenfassung: | The practical part of this diploma involves the accomplishment and documentation of the conservation and restoration of a severely damaged canvas painting owned by the foundation Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg. The damage can be ascribed to a failed wax-resin impregnation that took place during the first half of the 20th century. Excessive temperature and pressure have lead to irreversible compressions of the paint and extreme deformations in the canvas support. Within the bounds of the complex restoration a wax-resin extraction was undertaken on the low-pressure table, employing solvent gels. An airbrasive unit was used to remove brittle residues of the wax-resin compound. In addition, a combined treatment of the canvas deformations was carried out. The theoretical part of the diploma considers the difficulties of wax-resin extractions and develops the applied extraction in its contrasts and similarities with the published “Landgrebe method”. |
