Zusammenfassung: | Due to its severely damaged condition the painting was unexhibitable and much diminished in its visual effect. Amongst these damages were canvas tears and deformations, an over-all seperation of paint layers and significant paint loss. After an initial investigation the conservation focused on tear treatment and the levelling of loose and lifted paint flakes and canvas deformations. An over-all paint consolidation was carried out, before the painting was finally lined. The employed lining method derived from the work of van Och is assessed in the theoretical part of this diploma for its suitability for use on wax-resin treated paintings. It is concluded that this lining technique offers in principle a sufficiently strong bond, however the strength of the bond is influenced by a variety of factors. A prior extraction of the old wax-resin material does not appear to be absolutely necessary. German, 249 p., 154 ill. |
