Zusammenfassung: This diploma thesis addresses the painting technique of the Austrian landscape and still life painter Carl SCHUCH (1846- 1903). The artist, although at times a member of the Leibl-Kreis, is known to only a few experts and enthusiasts, and leaves behind a very extensive and va1uable opus. The main focus of the diploma thesis is the comparison between notes on painting technique made from two diaries and notebooks of SCHUCH with nine paintings. These works cover a wide range of SCHUCH`s Œuvre and can be found in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen München as well as in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere Wien. In this context, it is the first time that the exhaustively transcribed handwritings are being presented. In addition to the latest research methods on restoration concerning the technological composition of paintings, scientific research methods such as Infrared Reflectography (IRR), X-Radiography and Scanning Electron Microscopy / Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (SEM / EDX) have been applied. The analysis of materials used by SCHUCH was carried out via cross-sections, pigment and fibre samples with the main focus on the analysis of pigments.
