Zusammenfassung: | The conservation of archaeological wet leather with Neutralfat SSS or QL often results in white blooming. Six roman leather objects from an excavation in Trier are documented to show the different types of that phenomenon. The analyses (XRF, IR and GLC) showed that both Neutralfats are ammonium oleats with a few parts of some other fatty acids. But the white coatings are calcium soaps with a lot of different fatty acids. Therefore the white calcium soap coatings are not necessarily related to the applied Neutralfats. The different possibilities for cleaning are discussed and the results of treatments with detergents and solvants are presented in this document. However the flaking off of the grain finally led to a mechanical cleaning of the leather surfaces. |
