Zusammenfassung: The bachelor thesis deals with phenomena that can occur in the transparent coating of furniture surfaces. Historical and contemporary materials and application methods are considered, as well as the handling of transparent coatings in the history of furniture restoration.
A start has been made on collecting, photographing, illustrating and describing irregularities of coatings on furniture surfaces and attempting to name them according to optical characteristics. This will enable anyone working with a wooden object with a transparent coating to recognise, name and precisely document the surface phenomena. The collected phenomena can be divided into the groups of cracks, debonding, change of colour and irregularities in the surface structure.
When discussing the choice for appropriate conservation measures in conservation practice, it is important to understand the causes of the development of irregularities and damage in the coating. For this purpose, this thesis considers possible causes due to climatic, anthropogenic, biogenic and technical influences both in the carrier material wood and in the coating.
