Zusammenfassung: The baroque epitaph, donated by the former mayor Heinrich Rassow (1670-1743) to the town
church of St. Jacob and St. Dionysius in Gadebusch, is the only one of formerly six epitaphs of
this period that survived in the town church. Its focus is the portrait of the mayor – a highquality
canvas painting with complex image layer damage. Among other reasons, this was
caused by unfavorable climatic conditions of the location and manifests itself via weak adhesion
and cohesion of the image layers as well as disfiguring surface layers composed of calcium
oxalates and other contamination. The present work includes the examination, conservation,
and restoration of the artwork. The focus is on surface cleaning and consolidation with
Methocel®. To prevent the recurrence of damage to the portrait and epitaph, climatic
measurements were conducted at the work’s location in order to be able to assess the current
climatic conditions.
