Zusammenfassung: Since self-adhesive tapes came on the market, they were quickly introduced in libraries and archives. After some years the damage from self-adhesive tapes was recognized, unfortunately the damages to the paper objects are mostly irreversible.
After the Second World War, the self-adhesive tapes and self-adhesive paper labels were used in the Hildesheim Cathedral Library for the signature of the valuable incunabula inventory. The incunabula inventory mostly contains aged leather bindings. Whether self-adhesive tapes caused damages to the aged leather bindings cannot easily be identified. However, the self-adhesive materials should be removed from the binding materials as soon as possible in order to avoid possible future damage.
In this work, two series of experiments were conducted for the removal of self-adhesive materials from alum tanned leather covers. The tests include the separation of the carrier materials by a thermal-mechanical impact and the removal of the adhesive residues on the alum tanned leather covers by means of treatment with an eraser. The aim of the test series was to investigate the possibility of removal of the self-adhesive materials on alum tanned book covers as well as the transferability of the removal treatment to the incunabula inventory.
