Zusammenfassung: The Pompejanische Salon, which is part of the collection of the Wien Museum and is dating back to around 1800, is a classicist interior decoration à la Flair Pompéien. The thesis focuses on the pictorial works, which include a partially painted silk wall covering (60 dark-brown and beige silk fabrics), four paintings on canvas and two wooden panels. The condition status of every single of the 66 objects has been documented in separate written records as well as photographs for each object.
The three types supports – silk (lined on canvas), canvas, wood – are in stable condition. However, the matt, powdery and flaking paint layer has poor cohesive and adhesive properties. Therefore, a consolidation treatment is necessary. Care must be taken to avoid any changes in the appearance of the paint layer such as formation of gloss, tidelines or darkening. Further concepts include treatments like surface cleaning and reduction or disguising of numerous spots and stains by removal or retouching.
All conservation treatments were carried out on representative sample areas on three pictorial objects – on a segment of the silk wall covering, a painting on canvas and a panel painting – which have been examined at the Institute of Conservation-Restoration, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
