Zusammenfassung: The wooden sculpture is an early Gothic depiction of the Madonna, dated between 1330 and
1340. It was acquired by the Universalmuseum Joanneum from private ownership in 1976. In
addition to the art historical research, the focus of this work lies in the condition survey and its
evaluation, which includes extensive analysis of the remaining paint layers, mainly based on
optical examinations as well as instrumental methods. In the course of previous interventions,
the first version of the polychromy was completely overworked. The sculpture is in a poor state
of preservation, which can be attributed to natural aging and the numerous revisions and
exposures of the surface. Thus, as an example of many, it reflects the common conservation practice of the past. A suitable conservation concept is discussed, developed and executed
based on a detailed material and condition analysis. The selected conservation measures and
stabilization options are then be evaluated and executed.
