Zusammenfassung: | Hanji and Japanese paper were used for conservation and restoration measures on a large-format map of the city archive of Hildesheim to close cracks and as a composite material. Wheat starch in various concentrations was used as an adhesive. After treatment, material tensions occurred in the areas where Hanji was used as a stabilising material. To understand the different properties of Hanji and Japanese paper, the respective history, raw materials and manufacturing processes were investigated. In addition, comparative mechanical, chemical, microscopic and microbial investigations were carried out. The comprehensive results were also used to develop a re-treatment and reduction of material stresses. The material science investigations and practical applications showed that the two papers have clearly different properties and that information provided by the manufacturers should always be considered carefully and critically. |
