Zusammenfassung: | The painting entitled “Tod des Kaiser Franz I. (II.)” is attributed to Johann Nepomuk Ender (1793-1854) and dated 1835. Extensive flaking, due to loss of adhesion in the paint layers, had previously been consolidated in a resin-impregnation treatment as well as wax-resin lined in a later step. These past interventions caused extensive damage and impaired the painting´s appearance considerably. The infusion of the painting structure with hydrophobic material seriously complicated the current conservation treatment which required specific investigations of appropriate consolidation media and fill materials; these were determined by carrying out a variety of tests. Another main focus was the treatment of large-scale paint losses, which was achieved by reconstructive pictorial integration, and was facilitated by comparison with similar historical examples. |
